PHIL METAL JACKET

Who is this guy, anyway? (photo by Elaine innes)

Who the heck am I? I’m Phil.

I’m a video producer, editor, and director with over 12 years experience as a freelance filmmaker in Vancouver, BC.

I’ve worked as Digital Media Producer for Chor Leoni Men’s Choir for several years, and have helped establish the organization’s remarkable online media presence with ground-breaking content and programming.

When the pandemic began in 2020, I helped organizations such as Chor Leoni and the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra create digital performances that allowed the continuation of their artistic mission in a time when performance in venues with live audiences was impossible. In an extremely tough time for performing arts organizations, we were able to give these Vancouver cultural institutions a chance to endure and thrive.

I’ve also worked as a film editor in narrative film with feature film and short film credits.

Live Musical Performance Filmmaking

Over the years I’ve established myself in producing and editing live musical performance. My experience as a musician has helped me distinguish myself for having a strong sense for musical shape and timing in visual editing.

Music Video Production and storytelling

I love music videos. The ability to convey story and emotion in the constraints of recorded music, like a script with more specific timing, is something I find to be genuinely thrilling. Directing and editing music videos is one of my favourite things.

And I always wanted to make a dance film.

Creative Video Editing Solutions

Video can always provide opportunities to explore new techniques and solutions.

During the pandemic, musical ensembles and artists were able to keep performing by recording at home and having their performances combined in editing. This is way more challenging than it looks and we had to get creative.

When Chor Leoni was preparing for their 31st season, we worked with Vancouver photographer David Cooper on light painting photography for exciting and inspiration imagery for the season. We found some examples of light painting in motion, and it was up to me to figure out how it was done, but also how it could be used to convey our specific artistic vision.

Film and Events

Narrative Films

My first editing love was narrative film. I’ve worked on many short films, including this short war film, “The Hole,” which I co-wrote with a frequent filmmaker-collaborator, Steven Stiller.

We went on to complete a feature film, W.F.L.T., my first feature film editing credit.

Event Video

Events are a great opportunity to get creative in editing. Almost like a found-footage music video, it’s all about the action, the most exciting timing for cuts, and being open to surprises while you edit.

Also, it’s very fun to attach a GoPro to things.
